How to Land a Graduate Job: What Actually Works, According to a Recruiter

Graduate thinking about a job
You’ve tailored your CV, kept applying and followed the usual graduate job advice, but you’re still not getting anywhere. Discover the less obvious gaps that could be holding your job search back and what actually makes a difference. How to Land a Graduate Job

How to land a graduate job is one of the most searched questions among students and graduates right now, and if you have spent any time looking for the answer, you will already know most of it says the same thing. Apply widely. Tailor your CV. Be patient.

If you have done all of that and you are still waiting, you have probably started to wonder what everyone else seems to know that you do not. Here is the honest answer. It is not one thing. It is a handful of small, invisible gaps that are almost impossible to see from where you are standing, and very easy to see from where I am standing.

After more than 30 years in recruitment, I have watched thousands of graduates get this wrong in exactly the same ways, often while doing everything the generic advice tells them to do.

How to land a graduate job when everyone gives you the same advice

There is a common myth that landing a graduate job is simply a matter of following the standard checklist for long enough. The reality is that most graduates plateau, not because they are missing effort, but because they cannot see the specific things holding their own applications back.

That is not a criticism. It is genuinely very difficult to spot these gaps in yourself. Here is what I mean.

You may not actually know what you are aiming for, even if it feels like you do

Almost every graduate I speak to tells me they know what kind of role they want. Almost none of them, when we dig a little deeper, can explain clearly why an employer should choose them over anyone else applying for it.

That gap between feeling like you have direction and being able to demonstrate it convincingly is one of the biggest, quietest reasons graduate applications stall. It is also one of the hardest things to notice in your own writing, because it reads perfectly reasonably to you.

Your CV is probably being read differently than you think

Most graduates believe their CV is being read the way they wrote it, carefully, in full, with context. In reality, recruiters and screening systems are scanning for specific signals in the first few seconds, and most graduate CVs are structured in a way that buries exactly the evidence an employer is looking for.

This is genuinely hard to self-diagnose. You already know your own experience, so your CV always makes sense to you. It is a different document entirely to someone seeing it cold.

Your LinkedIn profile is doing more damage, or more good, than you realise

Recruiters routinely check LinkedIn before deciding who to invite to interview, often before they have even properly read the CV. Most graduate profiles are either invisible or unintentionally send the wrong signal, and almost no one tells you which one yours is doing.

Your transferable skills are either underselling or oversold, and you cannot tell which

Nearly every graduate has more relevant experience than they give themselves credit for, from part-time work to volunteering to running a society. The problem is rarely the experience itself. It is that graduates are the worst-placed person to judge how well they are explaining it, because they already understand their own story.

You are probably rehearsing the wrong things for interviews

Most graduates prepare for interviews by reading a list of common questions the night before. What they are rarely told is what an interviewer is actually scoring them against in the room, which is very often not the same thing as how polished the answer sounds.

How to land a graduate job when you cannot see your own blind spots

Every one of these gaps has one thing in common. They are almost invisible from the inside. You cannot read your own CV the way a stranger does. You cannot hear your own interview answers the way a panel does. You cannot see your own LinkedIn profile the way a recruiter searching for candidates does.

That is exactly why so many capable, hardworking graduates stay stuck for months, doing everything the internet tells them to do, without ever finding out which specific thing is quietly working against them.

This is where a second, experienced pair of eyes changes everything

At Career Garage, this is what we do all day, every day. Not generic advice, but a direct, honest look at your CV, your LinkedIn profile, your direction and your interview approach, from someone who has spent 30 plus years deciding who gets hired and who does not.

Most graduates we work with are not lacking potential. They are simply too close to their own job search to see what is holding it back, and no amount of generic advice fixes that, because the problem was never generic in the first place.

Find out what is actually holding your job search back

If you recognise yourself in any of this, the next step is not another article or another checklist. It is having someone who hires for a living look at your specific situation and tell you, honestly, what is working and what is not.
