How to use LinkedIn to find a job is a question I hear more frequently than ever. While many job seekers still focus primarily on their CV and applications, recruiters are increasingly using LinkedIn to search for candidates, verify experience and identify potential talent before a role is even advertised.
In our previous article, Why Am I Not Getting Interviews? 7 Common Mistakes Job Seekers Make in the UK, we explored some of the common reasons applications fail to progress. We then looked at How to Make Your CV Stand Out: 7 Top Tips for Job Seekers in the UK, focusing on how to improve your CV and increase your chances of being shortlisted.
However, even the strongest CV can only help if employers and recruiters have the opportunity to find you.
LinkedIn is no longer simply an online CV. When used effectively, it can become one of the most powerful tools in your job search strategy.
1. Optimise your LinkedIn headline
One of the first things recruiters see when they view your profile is your headline. Yet many people simply use their current or previous job title.
Your headline should help recruiters quickly understand who you are, what you do and where you add value.
For example, instead of:
Marketing Manager
You might use:
Marketing Manager | Digital Marketing Specialist | Brand Growth & Lead Generation
This provides more context and includes keywords that recruiters may be searching for.
Remember, recruiters are often searching LinkedIn using specific job titles, skills and industry terminology. The easier you make it for them to understand where you fit, the more likely you are to appear in relevant searches.
2. Complete your profile properly
One of the most common issues I see is partially completed LinkedIn profiles.
Missing profile photographs, empty about sections, incomplete employment history and limited information make it difficult for recruiters to assess your suitability.
LinkedIn rewards complete profiles. Not only do they appear more professional, but they are also more likely to appear in recruiter searches.
Think of your profile as an extension of your CV. If your profile looks unfinished, it can create doubt, even when your experience is strong.
3. Use the keywords recruiters are searching for
Having spent over 30 years in recruitment, I can tell you that recruiters rarely search for phrases such as “hard working” or “excellent communicator”.
Instead, they search for job titles, qualifications, industry experience, software platforms, technical skills and specialist expertise.
Think about the terms someone would use if they were looking for a candidate with your experience. These keywords should appear naturally throughout your profile, particularly within your headline, About section and employment history.
Just as we discussed in – How to Make Your CV Stand Out: 7 Top Tips for Job Seekers in the UK, it is important that your experience is easy to understand and aligned to the type of opportunities you want to attract.
4. Make sure your LinkedIn profile aligns with your CV
Your CV and LinkedIn profile should tell the same story.
If your CV positions you as a project manager but your LinkedIn profile focuses heavily on administration, it can create confusion. Equally, if key achievements appear on one but not the other, recruiters may question which version is most accurate.
Consistency matters.
If you are actively applying for roles, take the time to review both documents side by side. They do not need to be identical, but they should support the same professional narrative.
5. Build your network strategically
Networking does not have to mean sending messages to hundreds of strangers.
In many cases, it starts with reconnecting with former colleagues, clients, suppliers, industry contacts and people you already know.
LinkedIn provides an opportunity to build and maintain professional relationships over time. The larger and more relevant your network becomes, the greater your visibility across the platform.
Many opportunities arise through existing connections rather than formal applications, which is why networking remains such an important part of any successful job search.
6. Be visible, not just present
Creating a LinkedIn profile is only the first step.
Many job seekers set up a profile and then leave it untouched for months or even years.
You do not need to post every day or become a content creator. However, keeping your profile up to date, engaging with relevant industry content and maintaining an active presence can improve your visibility significantly.
LinkedIn is designed to reward activity. Even small actions can help ensure your profile remains visible to your network and potential employers.
7. Let recruiters know you are open to opportunities
LinkedIn provides features that allow you to indicate that you are open to hearing about new opportunities.
When used appropriately, these tools can help recruiters identify candidates who may be interested in suitable roles.
Before enabling these features, make sure your profile is fully optimised. If recruiters visit your profile, you want them to see a clear, professional and compelling representation of your experience.
A strong profile combined with the right visibility settings can significantly increase the number of relevant opportunities that come your way.
Why LinkedIn matters more than ever
Many job seekers still rely entirely on job boards. While job boards remain an important part of the process, they are only one route to finding your next role.
Recruitment has changed. Employers and recruiters are increasingly proactive, searching for candidates directly rather than waiting for applications to arrive.
This means your LinkedIn profile is often working on your behalf, even when you are not actively using it.
In many cases, opportunities arise because someone finds you, not because you found them.
Bringing it all together
Understanding how to use LinkedIn to find a job is about much more than having an online profile.
It is about positioning yourself clearly, increasing your visibility and making it easier for recruiters and employers to understand the value you bring.
When your LinkedIn profile works alongside a strong CV and a focused job search strategy, you significantly improve your chances of being noticed for the right opportunities.
